Note: I’m writing for Sunday a day late today because Kimpton last night! I’ll update again for today in a bit!
We woke up bright and early Sunday for a full day of driving, visiting, dining, and swimming. The first leg of our journey took us 2.5 hours north of Cortez to just outside Montrose, Colorado. We really enjoyed our time in Cortez, it’s another one of those places I’m sure we’ll return to someday, but we have an itinerary to keep up. Enroute we stopped in Telluride, a place where half an hour was nowhere near enough time. The town is full of historic charm mixed in with appealing restaurants. It quickly made the shortlist of places to stop next time we pass this way.
The reason for our stop in Montrose was to once again visit our friends the Berrys. Last year when we visited their house was nearing completion, but they weren’t quite ready to move in. Over the past winter they completed all the major construction projects and moved in full time. Everything was painstakingly detailed and looked absolutely beautiful. How cool to have a home that is perfectly suited to their desires in a perfect location! They treated us to a delicious brunch of quiche, bagels, and fruit salad followed by a walk around the estate. Quickly though, the time for us to move on came.
We began our climb up the McClure Pass and then long descent into Aspen. This was another town that we immediately fell in love with and would happily move to. Unfortunately, the airport full of private jets speaks to the complete unaffordability of the place as a home. Thankfully, there is a Kimpton hotel here, #2 of the trip. We were once again treated to an amazing welcome and for the night it did feel like home. I hope the girls will talk about the gifts showered on them, but I will mention the cocktails waiting for us, beers on ice, more local beer at wine hour, and yet more at dinner we were generously provided with. That last sentence should explain why I was unable to post last night.
We also managed to spend a great amount of time at the pool. One of the things we struggle with is answering the question “what was your favorite part”. For me one answer will be hanging out in the pool and hot tub under the stars in Aspen. As amazing and fun as the desert was, the mountains of Colorado feel like home. It’s sad we’re only here for such a short time each year. For the next two weeks we will soak up as much of it as we can. Hey Ya!
