Day 4: Les Houches

Tomorrow is the start of our hike! It got pretty real today as we made our way from Chamonix to Les Houches, the unofficial starting point of the TMB. We even bought a paper map of the route at the visitor’s center.

I saw this coq after riding the bus to Les Houches.

This afternoon we doubled checked all the gear. I removed each item from my bag and considered whether it was worth the weight. Some things were added and others removed. I feel pretty good about the combination of clothes, entertainment, food, and other gear in my pack. I hope someone else remembered to pack the soap because as I’m writing this I realize I don’t have any. We actually walked the first half mile or so of the route today so we’ll have some experience when we start tomorrow.

Apparently French yogurts have anxiety issues.

The rest of the day was mostly enjoying the plethora of good food available once again. Zoe and I split le petit dejeuner for breakfast. We sat next to a couple who literally ordered two of each thing on the menu. They spent their breakfast at war with the birds that kept trying to make off with some pastry or other.

We also had a great lunch in Les Houches. Who knew ribs, fries, and salad would be a value meal in the Alps? I’m pretty optimistic about there being continued good luck with food as we make our way around the mountain.

This evening I made some more progress on the sock I’m crocheting and practiced my French a bit to impress people on the trail. “Bonjour, un raton laveur a fait mes chaussettes”! Thanks Google translate!
