“I found myself on the continental divide

Tell me where do I go from here

Think I’ll ride into Leadville and have a few beers”

Jimmy Buffett

Rest day in Leadville. It’s a much better town than most of the touristy towns up here. It seems like somehow it’s managed to actually hold onto some of it’s rough-around-the-edges mining past. I think there was only 1 crappy T-shirt shop, and quite a few places that were actually worth the walk through. Still, it’s only about 5 blocks long and we did all there was to do in a couple hours. We needed the rest day, but we didn’t need the beer we’re drinking now to have a place to hang out for a couple hours.

Molly and I are sitting at the bar at The Tenneessee Pass, the girls are wondering town in search of a malt. It’s actually a great little bar, and seems to be the spot the locals hang out. Although right now I’m thinking about how good it will be to be on the trail tomorrow. I know that tomorrow there’ll be numerous times I wish I was right back here sipping on a beer. I guess the day is dull, but it’s really not so bad.

We did have a great lunch. A cute little sandwich shop with slow service that gave us a spot to hang out for well over an hour playing cards. Tonight we’ll have pizza at our spot (and order double garlic). Then back to the campsite for another early bedtime.

Tomorrow we’ll go for the summit of Mt. Massive, our 2nd 14er of the year. The elevation gain is about the same as Elbert, but the trail is about 5 miles longer. We’re going to compensate by waking up an hour earlier, but it’ll probably add at least an hour on the back end as well. We’re all going to have to get even more hyped this hike!

I’m about halfway through my beer now, and it’s only 2:30. I don’t have any more to write about, so I guess I’ll draft a new song. Working title: “Killing Time at a Bar in Leadville.”

I don't really want this beer,
don't even want to be here.
But I climbed a mountain yesterday
And I need the time to recuperate
So just like Jimmy did I'll pull up a stool and have a few beers.
Only difference is his album sold millions and no one will ever hear this.

Killing time at a bar in Leadville. Feel the beer kicking in. Killing time at a bar in Leadville. What the hell do I do after this?

My kids are texting "we're bored too"
No shit, offspring, there's nothing to do
Except kill some time til dinner
Maybe drink another drink?
I'm content drinking beer with your mom and writing down my crappy songs.
Have another malt or three, in a few more years I'll buy your beer too.

Killing time at a bar in Leadville. Feel the beer kicking in. Killing time at a bar in Leadville. What the hell do I do after this?

Is it still to early to go to bed?
Yeah, it's only 3:15 PM.
I know I won't sleep anyway, my head too full, my feet too cold.
4 AM can't come soon enough.
I know that in my tent, on my sleeping bag, without my wife I won't feel any better.
But at least I'll have a little purpose.

Killing time at a bar in Leadville. Feel the beer kicking in. Killing time at a bar in Leadville. What the hell do I do after this?
