The Coast

“Summer skies, stars are falling

All along the injured coast”

Paul Simon

Today wasn’t quite what we expected, but it ended nearly perfectly so I have no complaints. We got up early in Cortez and got on the road quickly. We were all a little sad that the HIE seems to be going through a severe cinnamon roll shortage. The yogurt was also quite separated and breakfast sandwich stale. The crabby breakfast lady there may be crabby, but at least she made a good breakfast.

Our first stop of the day was Ghost Ranch outside Abiquiu, New Mexico. I hadn’t done a lot of research on the exact plan for the day, but I knew it was where Georgia O’Keefe did much of her painting. It turns out that it is now a very touristy/churchy ranch. We passed on nearly all of the attractions. We did hit two that were up our alley though. First, we saw the cabin that was used in the filming of the original City Slickers.

We didn’t get a picture with the cabin, but we did get this shot with the official movie poster.

The second activity of the day was hiking the Box Canyin Trail. We were promised it would be shady, but it wasn’t. We then ate lunch in the car and moved along. Are next stop was at Abiquiu. It was brief.

Needless to say I was a bit nervous about heading to the hotel. This wasn’t the kind of place that had options. Mercifully, I can heartily recommend the Abiquiu Inn. We spent the afternoon relaxing in our adorable room and the courtyard it connects to.

Each road trip tends to have a few dinners that stand out and I’m certain tonight will be one. Again, this isn’t an area that has options, so we headed to restaurant at the inn. We sat on a patio, had perfect service, great conversation, and delicious New Mexican cuisine. In fact, it was such a nice night that when the time came we decided a second glass of wine and slice of chocolate tart were needed to prolong our leaving.

Tomorrow we head to Wheeler Peak, the highest summit in New Mexico. We’re making a backpacking trip out of it, so I assume we won’t have service tomorrrow.
