I’m so content now. I had the first green chile stew of the trip, over a glass on sangria, on the patio of the restaurant as the sun set. We laughed a lot at dinner as Ellie laid out her future plans of building a shack at COhome, eating our food, and never officially moving out. This afternoon I spent hours in the courtyard of our hotel reading as the hummingbirds ate from the flowering vines. We hiked at Ghost Ranch this morning. It was a good day.
I don’t know what I was expecting at Ghost Ranch, but it wasn’t whatever it was. The only background knowledge I had was that it is where Georgia O’Keeffe had lived and painted. I didn’t realize that, of equal importance, it’s also where City Slickers (the original) was filmed. This place is a cultural landmark!
We did a lovely 4 mile hike along a bubbling stream. It always amazes me to see running water and the life it carries in the dessert.
After leaving Ghost Ranch we headed to Abiquiu. Although, the layout of the town confused us and we ended up lost within the 6 streets, we found it a delightful spot. We’re staying in a quaint hotel with a kiva fireplace in the room, a flowery courtyard out the back door, and all around comfort. It was the perfect spot to rest this afternoon.
Tomorrow we start a backpacking trip to tackle the tallest peak in New Mexico, Wheeler Peak. I doubt we’ll have internet for a day or so.
