Day 3: Chamonix

When planning this trip we had originally intended we would fly in today, then some things happened and we decided it made sense to come earlier. That change meant that we were able to spend today in Chamonix!

Backtracking just slightly, we also had a delightful evening here last night. We intended to go out for dinner, but stopped for a glass of beer at one of the many restaurants lining the main street. That led to deciding to get some cheese to share, which led to our server explaining that for the same price we could get cheese AND meat, which led to the plate pictured below becoming our dinner. We also grabbed a bottle of wine and some delicious ice cream to top off the evening!

Somehow this looks much smaller in the picture than it was in real life.

Our hotel has a perfect little patio area overlooking the Arve River and with a magnificent view of the Mt. Blanc massif. We ended the evening there with the bottle of wine we’d picked up. After a great night’s sleep I started the day there as well and made good progress on the sock I’m crocheting while everyone else slept in.

The first paraglider I saw this morning. As the day went on the sky was filled with them.

Once the fam joined me we split up for the morning in search of the best food Chamonix has to offer. Molly and I split a breakfast of coffee, OJ, baguette, bread, crossiant, three jams, and chocolate spread. We had to battle a bee and several small birds. The birds were brave, but ultimately not enough to win any crumbs. The bee on the other hand, was not deterred. It claimed the jar of blueberry jam and spent breakfast excitedly wiggling it’s butt as it made several trips between the jar and its home. We did steal a few bites back when it left.

Breakfast

For lunch we found the perfect grocery store. It was packed with meats, cheeses, breads, and other delicacies. We settled on a couple beers and a couple of the sandwiches they had prepared and found seats out front to enjoy them at.

The afternoon has been a pretty lazy one on the patio. We’re on our second bottle of wine. The sock I’m making is nearly identifiable as a sock. The weather is perfect. Chamonix is great, but I’m looking forward to moving on to Les Houches tomorrow and the start of the Tour the next day!
