Day 15: Casa Grande National Monument and Kimpton Pooling

The girls were complaining that there isn’t enough to write about today and part of me has to agree. This isn’t going to go down as the most memorable day of the trip, but that’s okay. Everyday doesn’t have to be insanely awesome.

One of the highlights of the day was waking up to Kimpton coffee. I don’t know how they all do it, but Kimptons from coast to coast serve the best coffee. We, as Kimpton fanatics, have purchased their signature candles, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash and have contemplated buying their pillows from their online store, but can’t get our hands on their coffee except for our visits. Anyway, it was a great start to the day.

Although we are in a more urban area, we aren’t going to let that get in the way of us doing the National Park thing. We drove about 45 minutes outside of Phoenix to Casa Grande National Monument. The Ancestral Sonoran Desert People built this giant structure about 600 years ago. I can’t tell you why it was built, because no one knows. A couple of hundred years ago a priest found it while wandering around the desert trying to bring Jesus to the natives. He named it “Casa Grande” because it is literally a giant structure. As the trade routes were established in the desert in the late 1800s it became a roadside pit stop and many travelers carved their names into the adobe brick. About a hundred years ago the park service built a giant shelter to protect the house from the harsh desert elements.

The rest of the day was not very thrilling. We ate lunch at a brewery and lounged poolside for the afternoon. We did walk through the hotel to grab drinks at wine hour and noticed a lot of commotion. Kimpton was hosting the Phoenix Suns post draft party. All the draftees were onsite signing basketballs and other paraphernalia for season ticket holders. Although we aren’t Phoenix Suns fans, it was still cool to witness all the hubbub.

That’s about it for the day. It was a just fine one!
