I would ask, “Should we just keep driving?”

Today was the first absolutely positively normal old-school road trip day! It was a little bit weird leaving life in Colorado for a mini-vacation to Utah. Packing up last night was much less of an experience than packing for a full summer trip. We each threw a few days worth of clothes into our duffel bags. I don’t even think I used my entire two cubic feet. We added the hiking packs as well as our tank of water, breakfasts, lunches, and snacks and we were off. It was amazing how much empty space there was in the back of Fred. As soon as we were on the road I felt the comfort of Road Trips past.
The first was stop in Cortez for PBJ&C essentials. Much to the daughters dismay part of road tripping is granola bars and apple sauce for breakfast and PBJ&C for lunch. The whining began as soon as the first sandwich was made today. #WorstParentsEver.
The first REAL stop of the day was one that I’ve wanted to make for a very very long time. I remember being intreagued by the idea of the Four Corners since I first learned it existed. As an adult, I’ve been hesitant to spend the time and money necessary to put myself into four states at the same time. However, the route we drove today took us right past it and it seemed like there was no option to make the stop. The experience was pretty much as I’d imagined it – expensive and over quickly. It was also totally worth it. It’s one of the those things I’m glad I did once and never need to do again. Childhood dream fulfilled.

From there we had a looooooooong drive to Bryce Canyon NP. I took the first uneventful shift. During Molly’s turn driving I finally crocheted a few squares for the blanket I’m working on here. Then we finally arrived! We checked into our cabin at the Bryce Canyon Lodge. We anxiously held our breaths as the door was opened to see Molly’s reaction (she approved). We even took a walk along the Rim Trail to take in the view and snap some photos.

Right now we’re having a pitcher of beer at the restaurant in Tropic that we weren’t allowed to leave a few years back because we hadn’t ordered enough food. Our waitress is getting pretty nervous that we’re not going to order dinner (we are). She kind of scolded us the last time she was here for not ordering soon enough after we got the beer. Tonight we’ll head back to Bryce to take in the sunset, then tomorrow we’ll descend into the ampitheater for a nice long hike!

Update – we just ordered food and our waitress was very relieved.
