These Are Days

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break
These days you might feel a shaft of light
Make its way across your face
And when you do you’ll know how it was meant to be
See the signs and know their meaning
It’s true
You’ll know how it was meant to be
Hear the signs and know they’re speaking to you, to you

We did yet another epic hike today, thanks to a recommendation from Ranger Mike. As I’ve been planning trips I’ve known that one of my weaknesses was prioritizing time at National Park Service sites to the detriment of trails that are on Forest Service, BLM, or any of the other dozens of state and federal agency managed lands. I’ve tried to start expanding our hiking horizons so I was thrilled to be able to check out the Fisher Towers East of Moab.

I really don’t have a lot to say about the hike so this will probably be a short post. The trail wasn’t long, just 2.2 miles each way. It was a really fun 2.2 miles with lots of ups and downs, scrambling, and even a ladder at one particularly steep section. The most notable thing about the hike was, by far, the views. There isn’t a way to truly describe what it was like to be there. The views are just too big.

The Colorado River was to the North of us winding its way along the base of a mesa. Between the river and us where layer after layer of rock. We could actually see the rock that lay beneth each of the pervious layers as our eyes moved from the river to the area where were in.

The ending point of the trail was on top of a pillar of rock that allowed for views in every direction. We spent a good amount of time sitting and admiring the beauty of the desert around us.

The other highlight of the hike for me was watching a group of rock climbers scaling Fischer Tower. The were visible on and off the entire time we were hiking and it was fun to see their progress each time we caught a glimpse of them.

Moab really grew on me as a city this trip. I think the return to Canyonlands and change of hotel helped a lot. The restuarants (other than Thai Bella, which was great) really need to step up their game. There’s so many great hikes in the area, I can’t wait to return.

We finished up our hike shortly afternoon and continued the trip West to Richfield, UT where we’ll spend the night. We recorded an episode of Ellie Elevates Your National PArks on the way, it should be available to download by the time you read this, so go check it out!

Tomorrow we’ll be hunting for fossils, and then moving on to Baker, NV!
