Day 10: Chiricahua and Bisbee

My post from yesterday just finally had enough internet juice to post, but so much has happened since I wrote it. We were keeping our eye on those thunderstorms that the area needs so badly and we thought we’d be good to go for camping. We pulled into a great campground to find that most people had been scared of the potential rain and bailed on the night. The skies were blue and the sun was shining as we set up our tents and enjoyed a gourmet dinner of beef jerky, Cheetos, applesauce, and girl scout cookies.

Ellie was my tent partner and I’m always glad when she is. She comes with more experience and confidence than I have and makes the whole situation more bearable. We played round after round of Spot It until we heard the thunder roll through the mountains. The downpour followed and we were both a little spooked. Once the lightning passed us, I was able to calm down and really enjoy the sounds of the thunder and the flashes of lightning in the distance. Ellie eventually quieted and was able to take in the sounds as well. We both ended up having a good night’s sleep until the sun began to rise as some ungodly hour.

We left our camping gear out to dry and were off on a beautiful hike by 6 am. Chiricahua is simply beautiful and each mile of our hike provided us with the most lovely views. The rock formations are one of a kind and the sprinkling of forest, rivers, desert, and wildlife made the whole hike perfect. The temperature was cool, in the 60s, and we were all having a lot of fun doing what Zak loves most on Father’s Day.

After our hike and cleaning up camp, we had a very short drive to Bisbee, a town I would definitely come back and visit. We are just catching the end of Pride celebrations and the atmosphere is great. We found a good brewery and played rounds of Phase 10 while enjoying music from another nearby bar.

I want to wrap this up by stating that I don’t know how I got so lucky with my dad and Zak. They both take fathering to a whole new level and make life so fun. The girls and I are certainly fortunate.
