If you read the title of this post you might be thinking, “Geez, those two places are really far apart from each other.” And they are! We can all attest to that after today. It was an eleven hour car ride, but we lost an hour so our minds and the clocks think it was twelve hours. Not a whole lot happened to be truthful. In fact, if you are reading this blog for the adventure stories, it might be time to part ways. The remainder of the trip posts will probably be nothing more than:
- Kimptons are awesome.
- We spent the day on the beach.
- We drove all stinking day.
- The Kimpton pool is ah-may-zing.
If you are leaving Untangling Knotts, thanks for following along on our crazy adventure through some of Utah and Colorado’s NPs.
With that disclaimer, I do tend to make little things into big stories so…
- We went to a Cook Out outside of Nashville. We’ve been once before on another trip and ehh. Zak thinks it is amazing that you can get a burger with a side of chicken nuggets and a beef quesadilla. Or two hot dogs with a side of a corn dog and a chicken wrap. I know they have a cult following, but I’ll stick to the secret menu of In n Out. I will admit that each meal comes with a drink and you can upgrade that for $1 to one of 40 flavors of shakes. I went with the watermelon after Zak read on reddit that it is their best, only available in July and August. It was vanilla based with pieces of fresh, juicy watermelon blended in. It was so refreshing and simply delicious. Everything else, ehh.
- We finished listening to Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods.” It was such a good book and I’m glad we listened to it as a family. It was hard driving close to the start of the Appalachian Trail and not lacing up our boots and flinging our packs on our backs. We are going to listen to Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” next. I like that the girls are at the age they can comprehend and enjoy more adult books. It leads to great conversations that I’m actually excited to be part of.
- Georgia is a long state with a lot of billboards. The billboards are all for Jesus or “adult super stores.”
- The girls were awesome in the car. Just perfect. Until we were 2.5 hours from our destination, Valdosta, Georgia. At that point I don’t think one of us ladies could listen to another track from XM’s Margaritaville without losing our minds. But Zak was driving and driver gets radio power. I have never been so anxious to start my shift and neither have Zoe and Ellie. Finally, with only two hours to Valdosta, I took the wheel and blasted today’s top hits. All was a lot better then.
- We saw our first palm trees. Crazy to think that three days ago we were climbing a snow capped mountain in the Rockies and today we saw palm trees and Spanish moss growing on trees. It’s a fabulous, diverse country!
And that’s it. Those are the lame highlights of a long, boring day in the car with my family.
