Kansas City

Today was a long day of sitting in the car. We made the trip from Denver to Kansas City in only 8.5 hours, which isn’t too bad. We enjoyed a couple cups of Kimpton coffee, but didn’t really have much time to linger. It’ll be nice to enjoy it with our morning paper next time we’re there. There’s really not much to say about eastern Colorado or Kansas either. They’re pretty much the same as Iowa and Nebraska. At least we don’t have to make the list of places to return to in the future even longer.

Our big excitement of the day was a stop for dinner at Joe’s BBQ. I told Molly it was located in a gas station, but her quick research told her it was a former gas station so she was on board. When we arrived we noted the gas pumps were indeed still working and that the parking lot was packed. As we walked in the front door we also noted the line wrapping all the way around the inside of the gas station.

Both girls quickly requested ribs, and luckily for them (and us) the day’s special was a full slab of ribs for $19.99. We selected a few other items as well and headed off to our table. I’m happy to say that Kansas City BBQ lived up to its reputation. Everything from the ribs, to the pulled pork, to the chicken gumbo, and even the sides of cole slaw, fries, and onion rings were top notch.

From there we headed a bit further east and gave the girls a chance to swim. We also got a couple loads of laundry in and repacked our bags since we’re finished with the hiking and camping phase of the trip. It’ll be nice to have a bit less gear to lug into and out of hotels for the rest of the journey. Mol and I actually snuck away to the hotel bar for a quick drink tonight. Tomorrow we’ll be on the road early again for a quickish trip across Missouri to St. Louis where we’ll hang out for the afternoon. Although we didn’t really get too much time here I think it was a nice evening in Kansas City.
