Day 11: Baker, NV to Lee Vining, CA

Breakfast was most definitely the highlight of the day. I know I keep going on and on about Kerouac’s, but the love that seeps in each meal is so evident. This morning we had fresh squeezed orange juice, so pulpy and delicious and the richest coffee in hearty Great Basin pottery mugs. We ordered a variety of tastes to all share. A ham and sharp cheddar omelette and a breakfast sandwich with raclette, bacon, eggs, and a made from scratch biscuit. Fresh from the oven berry muffin and a current scone with lemon curd. Mouth watering? The best part was chatting with Jake and Kate, the creative minds behind this oasis in the middle of nowhere. We’ll be back, because good food with better people is hard to find.

We left Baker with the promise to return in two years, if not sooner, and hit the road, traveling west again. The road was straight through valley after valley, with a few twists and turns though small mountains. Miles and miles of just going forward, not looking back. We stopped a few times, once for new laces for Zak’s boots and new bladders for us all. Another stop in Tonopah for gas and pictures of the scariest motel in America. We crossed the state line and were checked by the California Border Protection to make sure we didn’t have any produce. Then the drive got fun. It was a good hour of sharp turns and drastically steep hills. The girls threw their arms up and pretended they were on a roller coaster.

We eventually made our way into and through the ponderosa pine forest and along the shore of Mono Lake. Our motel tonight is quite quaint and has a fabulous coffee shop attached. Only issue is that we have to share a bathroom with another room. I’m completely creeped out by this. We’ve all agreed that we’ll only use the facility if we all go together and showering will not be an option here.

Off to Yosemite tomorrow!!!
