Day 1: Home to Kearney, Nebraska

I’m fairly confident you could go back to Day 1 of most of the other road trips and you’d end up reading pretty much the same post as the one this will be.

We woke up early, I had to work a bit, then we hit the road. (I have to give a huge shout out to Zak and the kids for pretty much getting us totally ready as I finished out the school year these past few days.) The drive from Chicago to Kearney is exactly the same as it has always been, except for an extra lane added to I-80 in Omaha. Nice work, NDOT.

Time in the car passed with reading, singing along to our Road Trip playlist on Spotify, making friendship bracelets, and enjoying that long awaited “unlimited screentime.” We made the obligatory stop at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and nearly forgot to go into the actual house where he was born. We were busy attempting to chase down the blacksmith for a dinner triangle. We failed. The stop at the World’s Largest Truckstop didn’t even include a photo this year. Dinner was our third visit to Thunderhead Brewery. At some point, we also realized that we forgot the roll of papertowels, but if that’s the worst thing we forgot, we’re doing okay.

So that was pretty much day 1. We’ve been so anxious for this day. Literally counting down the days, and then hours, and finally minutes since we arrived home last year. But it was really a quite dull day. In fact, you’re probably asking yourself why you clicked that link to read this post. Our biggest hope at this point is that Day 1 will not go down as the best day of RTXIX. On to bigger and better things during the next seven and a half weeks!

**This will be my official request for you to please be patient with our posts. We write these on our phones, often after days that are much more exhausting than this one. We know we mess up our spelling and grammar occassionally (frequently?) and appreciate you not judging us too harshly. Thanks!
