Day 2: Nashville

Country music, fried chicken, and swimming. That pretty much sums up the day.

Our first stop on our exploring Nashville day was Biscuit Love. We found this on one of the internet’s lists of top things you must do in Nashville. It did not disappoint. Zak and I each had the number one sandwich in all of America according to Bon Appetite magazine. Fresh biscuits, homemade sausage gravy, sharp cheddar, and a perfectly fried chicken thighs. Oh my. It was perfect. The girls both had biscuits and gravy and we shared the creamiest cheese grits. Top it all off with iced coffee, and it was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had.

We then spent the next several hours walking and wandering around Nashville. We stepped into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Johnny Cash Museum. We went to the Goo Goo Clusters factory and made our way up and down Broadway listening to country music leak out of the doorways. We strolled along the river and sweat buckets of sweat in the sweltering humid heat.

With the great need to cool off and the desire to do Nashville right, we found Tin Roof, a bar on Broadway with live country music and cold beer at 1:00 on a Monday. The trio playing were really awesome. They were all pretty new to the Nashville music scene, were also bartenders at the Tin Roof, and had great talent. As soon as her kiddy cocktail arrived, Ellie went up and requested one of her favorite songs, “Bright” by Echosmith. The group didn’t know-know the song, but had heard of it and did their best to perform it for Ellie. She was smitten.

A friendly Uber ride back to the hotel led us to an afternoon of swimming at the rooftop pool. We read, sipped cold wine that quickly turned warm, and spent time relaxing.

After wine hour we went to another Nashville must do according to countless internet lists, Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. Omg. These Nashvillians know how to do their chicken. And baked beans. And coleslaw. And mac and cheese. And southern greens.

The evening is ending with wine poolside as the girls swim under the stars.

So there it is. Country music, fried chicken, and swimming. Turns out we don’t need much else for a good day.
