I sure lucked out. I have the best, most patient, hardest working dad ever. AND I have the most hilarious, compassionate partner in parenting. I recognize how fortunate the girls and I are to have these two great men in our lives.
Zak and I had planned on going for an early morning bike ride, but we’ve had so much rain here, we were certain the trails would be too muddy. Instead we settled for cozy cups of coffee has the storm bursts repeatedly approached and passed our home.
Rain?!? In the dessert? In the early summer? During a drought?? Yes!!! And how worthy of a celebration it is. We’ve had over an inch of rain in the past 28 hours or so. This is such a relief, as the area has been hit so hard by the drought. A big fear of these storms is lightning strikes starting wildfires. I haven’t read of any fires started this way, which is amazing. Although one model (the German one) had us at getting over four inches, more than the total annual precipitation, we’re happy with what we have received.
Another benefit of this rain is that it might be the start of our monsoon season. The start of the monsoon season is the end of the gnat season. Long time readers might remember the gnats of SW Colorado during the month of June. They literally ruined days of last year’s road trip. I’ve received a few bites this past week, and they’ve been itchy as all get out. I’ve done a great job not scratching within a few days the bites have been disappearing. Although the standard departure date is Fourth of July, I will be ecstatic if they are gone now due to the rain.
It wasn’t an adventurous Father’s Day, especially not in comparison to some of the others we’ve celebrated. We hung out at the house, Zak doing some of his favorite things, playing games as a family, constructing bunk beds, and building with Legos. It was a lovely day, ending with a delicious riverbank meal at Montezuma Mexican (no wine to go this time, mom.)
Cheers to all the dads out there!
