One of Zoe’s new favorite things to do is help empty the dishwasher. I always unload the clean dishes each morning after breakfast and Zoe immediately rushes to the usually very mysterious box. I always hand her a spoon or two and with her open hand she carefully pulls out our Fiesta plates and so seriously hands them to me. I sense she knows how delicate our dishes are and takes on this self appointed job with extreme caution. Once the bottom drawer is cleared out, the important part of her job is finished. I pull the top drawer open and the few remaining pools of water that have gathered in bowls and cups fall to the inside of the open door. The fun can finally begin for Zoe. She rapidly splashes the water about, soaking the cuffs of her shirt. Water drops fall all around the dishwasher, providing a quick fix the often grimy floor. As I finish unloading the dishes, I push the drawer in, signaling to Zoe that the fun water play time is over. She lifts the door up and pushes hard, to latch it into its locked position. And dishwasher playtime is over until the next morning.
