Bandelier National Monument

Today we woke up before our alarms (except for mom who slept in.) We got ready and headed to Bandelier stopping at Starbucks for coffee.

We got to White Rock Visitors Center and took the 9:30 bus into the monument. we got off early went on the Frey Trail. It was a mile and a half and relatively flat. Then we got to the main loop. It was very exciting looking and reading about all of the old cliff dwellings and kivas. The first kiva we got to go into. It was different because it was above ground rather than below ground. We got to go up inside of it. We kept on hiking more and finally got to the visitors center. We got Junior Ranger Packets cooled off and then headed off to long house. Long House was very cool because you could see the holes in the rock which they used to separate floors. They looked very close together but I’m 1/2 and inch taller than the average Ancestral Puebloan man and Ellie is as tall as the average Ancestral Puebloan woman. We then hiked up to Alcove house which required ladders to go up. Ellie is scared of ladders but not hikes and I love going on ladders but an somewhat afraid of heights. So the ladders took a while because we had to wait for Ellie but it definently made a scene. That house was the best. We go to go up a lot of ladders and it was shady up there. I would’ve wanted that to be my house. We hiked 5 miles total and some elevation gain which I don’t remember.

We then went to Los Alamos for the Manhatten Project National historic Site. We also went to this super interesting Museum about The Manhatten Project. Now we are chilling drinking Black Cherry Soda at a cute Brewery.
